How many of you have a DSLR camera? I would bet that most photography is done with an iphone or android device, but many of you probably have some kind of camera. Whether that is one that has interchangeable lenses, or not.
The photography industry has changed drastically since I started in the 70's. Gone are the days of having to develop film negatives with all kinds of chemicals. Gone are the days of only having 12, 24 or 36 clicks of your camera. If you did not get the shot within that range, you did not get it, or you had to change your roll of film. It is certainly not like today's digital world, where one memory card can hold over 1000 images!
But the general rules of photography are still the same. You want to be sure you are composing a portrait the best you can. You want to be sure your exposure is correct.
With phone cameras, you do not have to think about that at all. The phone does it for you. It is automatic! But, if you have a DSLR, then you CAN be in charge and make the decisions. You can put your camera on manual and figure everything out yourself to create the best portrait!
And, we are here to help. Our weekly Photo Tips of the Week are short and to the point. Simple tips that will help you create a beautiful portrait whether you are using an iphone, android or DSLR camera.
We will help you produce a great image of your family and friends with basic, general tips!
First up-Watch your Background
One thing that is often overlooked is what is in the background of your image. If your focus is a person right in front of you, most likely you are looking at him or her. Do not forget what is behind, though! Is there another person walking around? Is there a trash can or car in the image. Do you even want those items in your photo? They can certainly be distracting and pull your attention away from the subject.
Another important thing to remember is to watch for any extra objects protruding from your subject's head or torso. If your subject is standing in front of a tree, for example, often you will see that tree "growing" out of a person's head.

Watch Your Background
Have you ever looked at a photo and it looks like a tree limb is growing out of someone's head? It is easy to overlook what is going on in the background when you are focused on your subject. But, it is very important to scan everything around your subject to create the best portrait you can.
