Why Moms need to Exist in Portraits

Exist in Photos!

Some of the frequent statements I hear is "I'm never in any photos with  my children." or "I'm always the one with the camera taking photos of my family." The fact is, moms are the least photographed out of all the family members. Moms are usually the ones with the phone or camera documenting all the fun activities their children participate in, and taking "selfies" with their children.

Selfies are better than nothing at all, but I would love to see moms be "IN" professional portraits with their family.

Why Be in Portraits with Your Children

1. Your children will want photos of you and them together in years to come.

Many young adults cannot understand why this is important until they become parents themselves. Why? When they become parents, their children will want to see photos of their mom with their grandmother. After all, that is the beginning of their legacy!

What will they find when they turn 25 and ask for photos of their mom? Will mom be "in" the photo? If not, it is already too late. So, make time now to be "in" portraits with your kiddos-there will never be a better time than today.

2. You are usually the one taking all the photos.

As we mentioned, moms are usually the record keepers of their family. Moms seem to be the main proponents in capturing travel photos, and documenting children and family's activities. Since moms are the ones taking the photos, they are not IN the photos with their family. My heart goes out to them because moms need to see and remember that they were at their son's first birthday, playing with him and celebrating that milestone. They need to see themselves at the park with their children, pushing their children on a swing, or swimming in the pool while on vacation rather than scrolling through photos on a phone seeing other family members in each image.

Mom, you did go on that vacation. You were at your son's birthday party. And, yes, you were pushing your kiddos on a swing enjoying the time at the park.

Just because you are the unofficial family historian does not mean no photographs should exist of you.

3. Moms are So Important

Truth. Most moms put themselves last. They are the ones sacrificing their time , energy and selves for the betterment of their family. They do this willingly and gladly because they want to put their family first. They want to see their children thrive and grow and have the best opportunities available. They wish to see their children do and be better than they ever could be.

Moms-you wear many hats-caregiver, nurse, chauffeur, cook, cleaner, administrative manager and so much more. You often wear yourself out, and rarely take time off. You are often on call, seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

Guess what? You deserve more. You are so incredibly important to your family, but you are so much more than all the "titles" you  hold in the office of mom. You are a person-you-who you are.

You deserve to EXIST in these photos with your loved ones-not just for your family, but for yourself.

4. Tomorrow is not Guaranteed

Think about it-even though this is not something we like to think about. Who wants to think about death or losing a loved one? I know many who have battled life threatening health situations with some overcoming and a few succumbing to their battle.

The number one thing we have of our loved ones are the photographs and video we can look back on. Memories in our heart and mind are often blurred, but photographs freeze time and give us an accurate, beautiful record of the time and moments we shared.

Wrapping it Up

Having a tangible, printed piece of our loved ones might not be something we prioritize because we are so busy with the everyday grind. Daily, we forget to reflect on potentially important things...like leaving a legacy for our children and loved ones-printed memories that can be shared for generations to come.

Please, take a few moments to think about what is really important; truly important. Is it all the tasks on your list today?

It will be YOU. YOU existing in photographs so your children and family members will have a treasured legacy for years to come.
